Oswald, Richard A. (1771-1841)
Heir of Mrs Oswald of Auchencruive, whose funeral cortege produced an 'Ode' from Burns. See Oswald of Auchencruive, Mrs Mary and Oswald, Mrs Lucy. Richard is mentioned by the poet in his Second Heron Election Ballad: "An' there'll be wealthy young Richard, Dame Fortune should hang by the neck: But for prodigal thriftless bestowing, His merit had won him respect..."
In 1793 he married Lucy Johnstone of Hilton-on-Merse, by whom he had two children. She died in 1797, at Lisbon. In 1807, Oswald then married Lady Lilias Montgomerie, daughter of the twelfth Earl of Eglinton and widow of Robert Dundas Macqueen of Braxfield. Oswald was for a time Member of Parliament for Ayrshire.
