Orr, Thomas (d. 1785)
The son of Jean Robinson, who was the daughter of Julia Robinson of Park Farm, near Kirkoswald. Julia was supposed to have been a witch, and was undoubtedly a reseller of smuggled goods. Burns met Orr, who was studying navigation, when he attended Hugh Rodger's School at Kirkoswald to learn surveying. Orr worked as a harvest hand at Lochlea in 1780 and 1781. He went to sea in 1785 and was supposed to have drowned during his first voyage. Burns's three letters to him, together with those to Niven, are almost the only survivals of the poet's early correspondence.
