Orpheus Caledonius
The first important collection of Scots songs, it was published in London by William Thomson in 1725. It consisted of fifty of 'the best Scotch Songs set to music'. The second edition of 1733 contained a further fifty songs. Many of the airs to which Burns later set his own words came from this collection. Its editor was the son of Daniel Thomson, a professional musician in Edinburgh. Young William spent his boyhood in Edinburgh, but settled in London as a youth, and remained there for the rest of his days. AddendumLady Mary Douglas, daughter of the fourth Earl of Selkirk (who had narrowly escaped capture by John Paul Jones) loaned Burns her copy of Orpheus Caledonius after his visit with Syme to St Mary's Isle.
