Johnstone of Westerhall, Sir James (1726 94)
The 4th Baronet, he had been a lieutenant-colonel in the army. He represented the Dumfries Burghs in Parliament from 1784 89 and Weymouth from 1791 94. He lost his Dumfries seat to Patrick Miller junior, of Dalswinton. Burns wrote an 'Election Ballad for Westerha'' (which was principally directed against the Duke of Queensberry, whom the poet intensely disliked and who, in the manner of the time, had set up Miller as 'his' candidate for the 1789 election). Burns claimed: 'There's no a callant tents the kye But kens o' Westerha' Jamie.'
Johnstone was also the 'belted Knight' of 'The Five Carlins', his opponent, Miller, 'A Sogar boy, wha spak wi' modest grace'.
