Johnstone, William (d. 1805)
Younger brother of Sir James Johnstone, and afterwards 5th Baronet of Westerhall. He married Frances Pulteney, heiress of her father William Pulteney, Earl of Bath, and an eminent statesman. Her husband at his death was reputed to be one of the richest men in the British Empire, since he had acquired, through his wife, the Earl of Bath's estates. Burns referred to this great affluence in the 'Second Epistle' to Robert Graham on the Dumfries Burgh Elections: 'Not Pulteney's wealth can Pulteney save.'
