Inglis, William (1747-1801)
A Bailie on Inverness Town Council who entertained the poet during his Highland tour. In 1797, Inglis became Provost. He retired in 1800. He was reputed to be an able and public-spirited citizen. His portrait in his Provost's robes hangs in the Town Hall. A note from Burns to Inglis, dated 4th September 1787, is extant. It asks the postponement of a meeting, because Burns was 'jaded to death with the fatigue of today's journey'. He was staying Ettles Hotel.
