Inglis, The Reverend Wiliam (1741 1826)
Until Burns got suitable accommodation for his family at Ellisland, he lodged with the outgoing tenant David Cullie or Kelly, who was a member of the Reverend William Inglis's congregation at Loreburn Street Church, Dumfries. Inglis and Burns met, and later Burns joined Inglis's Church. He attended the poet on his deathbed. Inglis was born at Freuchie, in Fife, of Presbyterian dissenting parents. He was ordained minister of the Anti-burgher congregation at Leslie in 1765, and shortly afterwards was transferred to Dumfries. On a monument erected in Dumfries by his congregation is printed the testimony: '... As a minister, he was a fearless reprover of vice, a faithful promoter of virtue, assidous and punctual in the discharge of all his various duties.'
