Williams, Helen Maria (1762 1827)
An English authoress, born in London, who spent her early years in Berwick. She served Dr Moore for a time as an amanuensis. On reading Burns's 'To a Mountain Daisy', she composed a sonnet in the poet's honour. On 25th June 1787, Dr Moore forwarded the sonnet, which contains the injunction: "Scotia! from rude afflictions shield thy Bard His Heav'n taught numbers Fame herself will guard."
On hearing of Burns's approval of it, she replied that 'a much less portion of applause' from him would have been 'gratifying'. In 1790 she settled in Paris. Like Burns an early supporter of the French Revolution, she upheld the Girondists, and was imprisoned from the fall of the Girondists until the death of Robespierre. She later condemned the Revolutionaries, and upheld the Bourbon case. She published Julia, a novel, in 1790, and translated Paul and Virginia. Her poem The Slave Trade, appeared in 1788. Burns read this poem and sent her a long letter of criticism from Ellisland in August 1789. She also wrote several books on France. She died in Paris.
