White, Thomas (1758-1825)
A Hexham, Northumberland man, who taught in Dumfries Academy for forty years, first as mathematics master, and then as rector. He was a second lieutenant in the Dumfriesshire Volunteers. Burns presented him with a copy of the 1793 Edinburgh Edition of his Poems, and with a copy of Voltaire's La Pucelle, which is still extant. White is supposed to have testified to the interest Burns took in his children's schooling. In White's family, there ran the tradition that Burns was a guest a White's house every Saturday. He did much to promote interest in Burns's work, and remained a friend even in the last months when the poet's revolutionary opinions had alienated many of his other friends. On Burns's death, Whit produced in verse 'A Tribute to the Memory of Burns'. He himself lies buried in St Michael's Churchyard, Dumfries, not far from Burns's grave. A contemporary described him as 'This excellent man and profound mathematician... as a man, he has not left an honester behind him'. White corresponded regularly with another mathematician, Dr Olinthis Gregory, who said of him: 'His abilities, both as a speculative and as a practical mathematician, were of no common order.'
