Washington, George (1732 99)
In his 'Address of Beelzebub', Burns refers to the emigrating Highlanders as perhaps having 'Some Washington' to 'head them'. George Washington was general in command of the American forces in the War of Independence. Unlike some generals, he was also a fine statesman. He became the first President of the United States after the American War of Independence, and was largely responsible for the American Constitution. An 'Ode on George Washington's Birthday' was written by Burns while on a visit to Castle Douglas.
