Tonnock, Nanse
Burns said she was one of his Mauchline hostesses, where he studied politics over a 'glass of gude auld 'Scotch Drink''. Nanse, when she read the poem, 'The Author's Earnest Cry and Prayer', where Burns mentions drinking a health in her house, said he was only there once or twice. 'Auld Nanse Tinnock's', known before Burns's time as 'The Sorn Inn', stands in Castle Street, almost opposite the house of Dr John Mackenzie. It is supposed to date from 1712. It overlooks the parish church, and once had a stairway leading down to the churchyard, made well known by Burns as the setting of 'The Holy Fair'. It is now the property of the Glasgow and District Burns Association, having been donated, along with Dr Mackenzie's House and the one known as the 'Burns House', by Charles Rennie Cowie between 1915 and 1924. It Was once occupied by old people, free of rent. But in 1958 they were moved to a row of new cottages opposite Mossgiel. The old houses have been preserved and made into a Museum
