Taylor, John

Apparently a man of influence in Wanlockhead. When Burns arrived at the forge there on a frosty day, the smith was too busy to frost his horse's shoes, so Burns wrote a verse on the spot to Taylor. When Taylor heard what was the matter, he spoke to the smith who attended to the poet's horse at once.
"Poor slip-shod, giddy Pegasus
Was but a sorry walker,
To Vulcan then Apollo gaes
To get a frosty caulker.
Obliging Vulcan fen to wark,
Threw by his coat and bonnet
And did Sol's business in a crack,
Sol pay'd him with a sonnet."

Chambers explained that a horse was: 'said in Scotland to be 'frosted' or 'sharpened' when it is rough shod for frost weather, by having the edges at the front of the shoes — the calks, calkins, calkens or caulkers — turned over so as to grip on the slippery ground.'
