Steven, The Reverend James (1761-1824)
A native of Kilmarnock, Steven was assistant to the Reverend Robert Dew of Ardrossan when Burns heard him preach, probably on exchange with Auld at Mauchline. His text, Malachi iv, 2, 'And Ye shall go forth, and grow up, as Calves of the Stall', prompted Burns to write his poem 'The Calf', winning with it a wager made with Gavin Hamilton that he 'would not produce a poem on the subject in a given time'. Steven moved to London in 1787 and became a founder of the London Missionary Society. In March I 790, Burns's brother William heard Steven preach in London, and reported 'the Calf' to be 'grown very fat, and... as boisterous as ever'. He returned to Ayrshire as minister of Kilwinning in 1803.
