Staig, David (1740 1824)
He became Provost of Dumfries in 1783, and frequently thereafter, occupying the office for a total of twenty years. The Provost's daughter, Jessie, married Major William Miller, a son of Patrick Miller of Dalswinton. During the later part of his life, Staig became Collector of Customs for Dumfries. He was a popular and energetic public figure. Among the benefits he secured for his town were an academy, a new quay, a new bridge, and a regular mail-coach service between Edinburgh, Dumfries and Portpatrick, then the link with Ireland. Two letters from Burns to Staig survived. One accompanied a copy of a Prologue for Mrs Sutherland. The other dated by Ferguson provisionally January 1793, contained a suggestion to the Provost and Magistrates of Dumfries as to how they could remedy a defect in their 'twa pennies' tax levied on ale brewed within the town, but not on ale brewed elsewhere and imported. Burns's suggestion was adopted.
