Smith. Jean (1768-1854)
The witty one of the 'Mauchline belles', and the sister of Burns's youthful friend James Smith. She married James Candlish, an Edinburgh lecturer in medicine and an early friend of Burns. She died in Edinburgh, and was buried in the Old Calton Churchyard, where there is a tablet erected to her memory by her son, who became a Free Church theologian, the Reverend Dr R. S. Candlish.
