Smeaton, or Smytane, The Reverend David
He was ordained to the Burgher Pastorate of Kilmaurs in 1740, having previously been an itinerant Dissenting (Whig or Cameronian) Minister in Ayrshire. Burns alluded to him in a letter to Miss Chalmers from Edinburgh, October 1787. 'The whining cant of love, except in real passion, and by a masterly hand, is to me as insufferable as the preaching cant of old Father Smeaton, Whig-minister at Kilmaurs.'
