Sinclair of Ulbster, Sir John, Bart. (1754-1835)
Born at Thurso Castle, he was Member of Parliament for Caithness in 1780; for Lostwithiel in 1784; and for Petersfield from 1796 to 1811. He was the first president of the Board of Agriculture. He died in Edinburgh. His chief works were his History of the Revenue of the British Empire, 1784, and, by far the most important, his Statistical Account of Scotland, in twenty-one Volumes, published between 1791 and 1799. The first systematic attempt to compile social and economic statistic, for the whole country, it was written largely by ministers of the various parishes, and has preserved for us a vivid record of life in Scotland at the close of the eighteenth century. Burns's friend, Robert Riddell, was highly dissatisfied with the account of the parish of Dunscore, sent in by the parish minister (and with some cause!); so he persuaded Burns to send Sir John an additional article on the Monkland Friendly Society, which he and the poet founded. Burns despatched his contributions from Ellisland in August or September 1791, and it duly appeared. See Monkland Friendly Society.
