Shepherd, The Reverend John (1741-99)
Son of the minister of Newbattle, educated at Edinburgh, translated from Hemel Hempstead to Muirkirk in 1775, he contributed a well-written account of Muirkirk to Sir John Sinclair's Statistical Account. He had an unfortunate habit of saying rude things in the mistaken idea that they were funny, thus provoking Burns's satire. In 'The Kirk's Alarm' Burns called him: "Muirlan' Jock, Muirlan' Jock, whom the Lord gave a stock Would set up a tinkler in brass; If ill manners were wit, there's no mortal so fit To prove the poor Doctor an ass, Muirlan' Jock! To prove the poor Doctor an ass."
