Sackville Lord George Germain, first Viscount (1716-85)
Third son of first Duke of Dorset. He fought with Cumberland at Culloden. He also fought in Flanders. at Dettingen and Fontenoy, and at the battle of Minden was Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces under the full command of Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick. But Sackville failed to carry out the Prince's orders to charge, because he considered they were not clear, and was consequently relieved of the command of his regiment, and court-martialled. He was later restored to favour, became a supporter of Lord North, and under his ministration became Secretary of State for the Colonies. Walpole described him as 'one of the best speakers in the House'. He resigned in 1782, and was created Viscount. Burns referred to him sarcastically in the 'Address of BeeIzebub': "Nae sage North now, nor sager Sackville To watch and premier o'er the pack vile--!"
The poet Churchill, in 'The Candidate', also wisecracked: "Sackvilles alone anticipate defeat, And, e'er they dare the battle, sound retreat"
