Rutherford, Captain
A polite, soldier-like gentleman', whom Burns met and dined with, when in Jedburgh. The Captain, according to Burns, had been for many years in the wilds of America, and had been taken prisoner by the Indians. His wife, Burns said, was 'exactly a proper matrimonial second part for him', but his daughter, although 'her face [was] very fine' was 'too far gone a woman to expose so much of a fine swelling bosom'.
