Riddell, Robert Andrew (fl. 1793)
A minor landscape painter who specialised in topographical views of Scotland. He was a near neighbour of John Murdoch, Burns's schoolmaster, in London. Riddell exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in 1793. He seems to have presented twelve pictures to Burns. A letter from Burns to Riddell, dated 22nd September 1794, presumably referring to the gift, promises an answer in the form of 'a poetic epistle in one of our Newspapers', as soon as he is able to 'arrange my numbers to please myself'. The reproductions of Riddell's pictures which have survived do not suggest that the originals can have possessed much merit.
