Reid, The Reverend Dr Thomas (1710-1796)
Born at Strachan, Kincardineshire, he was descended from a long line of ministers. He studied divinity, and for a time held the living of New Machar, near Aberdeen. In 1751 Reid got a 'regentship' at King's College and later became Professor of Philosophy in Aberdeen University. He was author of An Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (1764) which purported to answer the scepticism of David Hume. Burns referred twice to Reid's common-sense doctrine of philosophy. One reference is in the prologue he wrote for the actor William Woods' Benefit Night: "Philosophy. no idle pedant dream, Here hold her search by heaven taught Reason's beam."
The other reference is in 'To James Tennant of Glenconner': "An' Reid, to common sense appealing."
In 1764, Reid succeeded Adam Smith as Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University.
