Rankine, John (d. 1810)
Farmed Adamhill near Tarbolton. A man of coarse good humour, he became friendly with Burns during the later days at Lochlea. He apparently got to know that Elizabeth Paton was expecting a child by Burns the poet's first and twitted Burns, who replied with two insignificant stanzas, and then with the clever and technically daring 'Epistle to John Rankine'. The poet describes his successful seduction in terms of the field. The 'poacher-court' got to hear of the 'paitrick hen' he had brought down with his 'gun', so he had to 'thole the blethers an' pay the fee'. He tells Rankine that as soon as her 'clockin'-time' is by, and the child is born, he means to have further 'sportin' by and by', to get value for his guinea. Burns afterwards sent Rankine a silvermounted snuff-box. See Rankine, Anne.
