Peterkin, Alexander (1708-1846)
A native of Macduff, Banffshire, where his father was parish minister. In 1785, the Peterkins moved to Leadhills, and later to Ecclesmachan, West Lothian. Peterkin finished his education at Edinburgh University. He qualified as a solicitor in 1811, and was at one time Sheriff-Substitute of Orkney. He spent much of his life journalising, editing an edition of Robert Fergusson's Poems in 1807, and in 1815 issuing a reprint of Dr Currie's edition of Burns's works, to which he added a critical preface. His importance lies in the fact that by including in his edition the testimonies of Findlater and Gray, Peterkin struck the first blow against the legend of Burns's perpetual drunkenness which Currie, and others, deliberately foisted upon the public.
