Niven, John, Sen.
Father of Robert Niven. John Niven was a blacksmith at Damhouse of Ardlochan, in Kirkoswald parish. He had eight children. He first introduced wheelcarts of his own manufacture into Carrick, replacing the old-fashioned wheelless sledges. He was the smith referred to in 'Tam o' Shanter': "That ev'ry naig was ca'd a shoe on, The smith and thee gat roarin' fou' on."
