Neilson, The Reverend Edward (d. 1824)
Minister of Kirkbean, in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, from 1789 until 1824. Burns described him in a letter to Dr Moore from Ellisland, 23rd March 1789, as: 'a worthy clergyman in my neighbourhood and a very particular acquaintance of mine'. The poet went on to ask Dr Moore to tell Neilson how best to travel in France because: 'Mr Neilson is on his way for France, to wait on His Grace of Queensberry, on some little business of a good deal of importance to him'. According to Chambers, this 'little business' referred to the matter of his presentation. Chambers records that: 'He had been 'presented' to the parish of Kirkbean by the Duke of Queensberry, who had, however, forgotten to send 'the presentation' - the legal document enabling a Presbytery to proceed with the settlement of a minister before he left Scotland. Mr Neilson went in pursuit, but failed to find the Duke. Ultimately, a document, signed by the Duke's factor, was accepted by the Presbytery of Dumfries as a legal presentation.'
