Muir, William (d. 1793)
Owner of Willie's Mill, Tarbolton, which is mentioned in 'Death and Dr Hornbook'. Muir was a friend of the Burns family. He took in Jean Armour when she discovered that, for the second time, Burns had made her pregnant. Here, Burns visited her on 23rd February 1788, riding back to Mossgiel from Dunlop House. Thereafter, he wrote to Clarinda, calling Jean a 'farthing taper beside the cloudless glory of the meridian sun', the 'sun' being, of course, Clarinda. In his Second Commonplace Book, Burns wrote an epitaph on Muir: "An honest man here lies at rest, As e'er God with his Image blest: A friend of man, the friend of truth, The friend of age and guide of youth; Few hearts like his-with virtue warm'd, Few heads with knowledge so informed: If there's another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this."
Burns was largely responsible for helping Muir's widow, through the good offices of Gavin Hamilton.
