Moro, El
A castle which defended the entrance to the harbour at Santiago, a small island off Cuba. It was stormed in 1762, and taken by the British. Havana surrendered as a result, with a considerable gain in spoil amounting to three million pounds. Burns mentioned the castle in the 'Soldier's Song' from the Jolly Beggars Cantata: "And the Moro low was laid at the sound of that drum."
