Montgomerie of Coilsfield, Hugh, twelfth Earl of Eglinton (1740 1819)
Hugh Montgomerie served in the Army during the Seven Years War and in America, rising to the rank of Colonel of the West Lowland Fencibles in 1793. Burns referred to him as 'Sodger Hugh' in 'The Author's Earnest Cry and Prayer'. He was Member of Parliament for Ayrshire from 1784 to 1789, and again in 1796. In the same year he succeeded his cousin, Archibald, and became twelfth Earl of Eglinton.
