Montgomerie, Archibald, the eleventh Earl of Eglinton (1726 — 96)

The Montgomeries, Earls of Eglinton, settled in Scotland in the twelfth century and counted in their number Sir John Montgomerie, who captured Percy at Otterburn in 1388, and alexander, the sixth Earl, nicknamed Gray-Steel in the Civil War. Archibald, the eleventh Earl, succeeded to the title in 1769. He was known as General Montgomerie, having raised the 77th Regiment of Foot in the Highlands in 1757, of which he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in command. He was for a time Member of Parliament for Ayrshire. In 1776, he was chosen as one of the Sixteen Scottish Representative Peers. He was appointed Governor of Edinburgh Castle in 1782, in which role he was succeeded by his cousin, Colonel Hugh Montgomerie, the 'sodger Hugh' of 'The Poet's Earnest Cry and Prayer'. Eglinton sent ten guineas to Burns on his arrival in Edinburgh as a subscription for two copies of the Edinburgh Edition of the Poems. Replying on 11th January 1787, Burns said:

'Your Munificence, my Lord, certainly deserved my very grateful acknowledgements, but your Patronage is a bounty peculiarly suited to my feelings.'

Incidentally, the thirteenth Earl organised the famous Eglinton tournament, which ruined the family, and is described by Disraeli in Endymion.
