Moir, John
An Edinburgh printer, who, according to Chambers, claimed that while serving his apprenticeship in a printer's shop in the High Street, he once watched Burns making inquiries about printing a volume of poems from his master. The man is supposed to have thought Burns was some 'poor crack-brained versifier, who might give him a good deal of trouble, but was not likely to yield much solid return in the way of business.' Burns went away offended, having first shown the printer a quantity of money. When the man learnt who had approached him, and what an opportunity he had lost, he resolved to be more careful in future. Accordingly, he printed the works of the next poem to approach him, an unknown Aberdeenshire versifier, and lost heavily.
