Miller, the Rev Alexander (d. 1804)
Minister of Kilmaurs parish church, where he was ordained in 1788, much against his parishioners' wishes. According to Burns Miller professed Auld Licht sentiments, but in reality had leanings the other way. He is the 'Wee Miller' of 'the Holy Fair'. "Wee Miller neist, the Guard relieves [next An' orthodoxy raibles, [rattles on Tho' in his heart he weel believes, An' thinks it auld wives' fables; But faith! The birkie wants a manse, [fellow So, cannilie he hums them; Altho' his carnal wit an' sense Like hafflins-wise o'ercomes him [partly At times that day."
Miller later alleged that these derogatory lines had retarded his advancement.
