Miller, Sir Thomas (1717 88)
Son of William Miller, of Glenlee, in Kirkcudbright. Educated in Glasgow, he was called to the Bar in 1742, became Lord Justice Clerk with the title Lord Barskimming in 1766, and afterwards Lord Glenlee. In January 1788, he succeeded Sir Robert Dundas as Lord President of the Court of Session, and became a baronet, but died a few months later. Burns described a scene in Barskimming estate, on the Ayr, in 'The Vision': "Thro' many of wild, romantic grove, Near many a hermit-fancied cove, (Fit haunts for friendship or for love, In musing mood). An aged Judge, I saw him rove Dispensing good.'
Sir Thomas's son, Sir William, is mentioned in the Second Heron Election Ballad as 'Barskimming's guid knight'. Sir William became a judge with the title of Lord Glenlee.
