Menteath, The Rev James Stuart (d. 1802)
Rector of Barrowby in Lincolnshire. He assumed the name of Stuart in 1770. He purchased Closeburn estate from Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1783. His factor was William Stewart. Burns and Captain Riddell started a parish library, the Monkland Friendly Society. In a letter to the Edinburgh bookseller Peter Hill from Ellisland, 2nd April 1789, Burns mentioned this project and added, 'There is another, in emulation of it, going on at Closeburn, under the auspices of Mr Menteath of Closeburn, which will be on a greater scale than ours. I have likewise secured it for you.' Menteath's son, Charles, was created a Baronet in 1838.
