McDoual, Captain Andrew
At the early age of twenty-five, Captain (afterwards Colonel) McDoual represented Wigtown in Parliament. He seduced Margaret Kennedy (q.v.), who had a daughter by him in 1794. He married the daughter of a Dumfriesshire Laird, and heired his father's estate of Logan in Wigtonshire. In the Second Heron Election Ballad, among those who would be at Kirkcudbright: "... there'll be Logan McDoual Sculdudd'ry an' he will be there".
and in the 'Epistle from Esopus to Maria (which is possibly not really the work of Burns) he is referred to as: "The crafty Colonel leaves the tartan'd lines For other wars, where he a hero shines."
Chambers called him 'a noted Lothario', and he was apparently an admirer of Maria Riddell.
