Maxwell of Cardoness, David (b. 1825)
A Kircudbrightshire laird created a baronet in 1804. He figures in the second Heron Election ballad: "An' there'll be Cardoness, Esquire Sae mighty in Cardoness' eyes..."
Cardoness supported the Tory candidate, Gordon of Balmaghie. In a letter to Mrs Dunlop, Burns described him as a 'stupid money-loving dunderpate'. Burns also wrote of him as 'A Galloway Laird Not quite so wise as Solomon': "Bless Jesus Christ, O Cardoness, With grateful lifted eyes, Who taught that not the soul alone, But body too shall rise; For had he said "The soul alone, From death I will deliver," Alas! Alas! O Cardoness, Then thou hadst lain for ever!"
And again: 'On being Shown a beautiful Country Seat': "We grant they're thine, those beauties all, So lovely in our eye: Keep them, thou eunuch, Cardoness, For others to enjoy!"
