Maxwell, Robert (d. 1792)
Provost of Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, from 13th September 1782, to 29th September 1790. Burns in a letter to Graham of Fintry, dated 9th December 1789, described Maxwell as: 'one of the soundest headed, best hearted, whisky drinking fellows in the south of Scotland.' The poet's one surviving letter to Maxwell is a coverin note for the bawdy ballad, 'I'll tell you a tale of a Wife', which is to be found in The Merry Muses.
