Mauchline Conversation Society
The minute book of the society shows it to have existed from 30th October 1786 until 20th November 1797. David Sillar was at the top of the list of the original members, and although Burns did not attend any of the meetings, his brother Gilbert was a leading conversationalist. If members did not attend, they were fined, and the money was used to buy books. These included Rousseau's Emile, Voltaire's Peter the Great, Mackenzie's The Man of Feeling, and sets of The Mirror and The Lounger. Love and marriage, and the French Revolution, seem to have been subjects which interested the members. Two of Gilbert Burns's questions were: 'Whether, in a young man's looking out for a wife, he ought to have more regard to her fortune or her personal charms?'and: 'Whether it is probable, if a Republican form of Government were to take place, it would lead to more happines for the present generation?'
