Markland, Jean (1765-1851)
One of the 'Mauchline belles'. She was the daughter of a Mauchline merchant, George Markland, and she and her parents were charged before the kirk session for attributing witchcraft to the wife of another merchant. The charge was not proceeded with. She latere married a Tarbolton Excise Officer, James Findlay, to whom, according to Chambers, she was introduced by the poet. Findlay is generally said to have instructed Burns in gauging and book-keeping for the Excise. Jean died in Greenock.
