Maitland, James, 8th Earl of Lauderdale (1759 — 1839)

One of the 16 Scottish peers elected to the Lords, and a founder of the 'Friends of the People'. At the time he met Burns in Edinburgh, Maitland represented the seat of Malmesbury for Fox in Parliament. He succeeded to the Earldom in 1789, but still adhered to his liberal views. In the subsequent political trials instigated by the government of Pitt, Maitland could not be touched with impunity, so it was on humbler men like Thomas Muir that the government's fear was vented.

In 1806, Maitland was created a Baron of the United Kingdom. He was also Keeper of the Great Seal. He undertook an unsuccessful diplomatic mission to France to attempt a peace settlement.

Burns, writing to Dr John Mackenzie of Mauchline from Edinburgh on 11th January 1787, said that he had met Maitland and his brother at breakfast and found them 'exceedingly easy, accessible, agreeable fellows; and seemingly pretty clever.'
