Maggie
An old mare belonging to Burns, and the subject of his poem: 'The Auld Farmer's New Year Morning Salutation to his Auld Mare, Maggie.' The poem says: "It's now some nine an' twenty year, Sin' thou was my guidfather's meere; He gied me thee, o' tocher clear, [dowry An' fifty mark; [Scots coin worth 13s. 4d. Tho' it was sma', 'twas weel-won gear, [well-earned money An thou was stark." [strong Having given the mare her ripp of corn, the poet, anticipating 'John Anderson, my jo', remembers the experiences man and animal have shared: "We've worn to crazy years thegither; We'll toyte about wi' ane anither; [stagger Wi' tentie care I'll flit thy tether To some hain'd rig, [reserved piece of ground Whare ye may nobly rax your leather [stretch Wi' sma' fatigue."
