Lowther, James, 1st Earl of (1736 1802)`
Descended form Sir Christopher Lowther, the first earl was a Member of Parliament from 1757 to 1784, using his wealth to dominate politics in the North of England. His nominees in the house were known as 'Sir James's ninepins'. Alexander Carlyle, in his Autobiography, summed him up as being 'more detested than any man alive... 'a shameless political sharper, a domestic bashaw, and an intolerable tyrant over his tenants and dependants.' Carlyle concludes that he was 'turly a madman, though too rich to be confined'. He appointed Boswell Recorder of Carlisle, but humiliated him into resignation. If 'From Esopus to Maria' be genuine, Burns refers in it to Lonsdale's treatment of the Dumfries Players.
