Logan, of Afton, and, later Laight, John
Proprietor of Knockshinnock in New Cummnock, he married Martha, the daughter of Captain MacAdam of Laight, on the River Afton. When the Captain died, Logan lived at Laight, which marched on Knockshinnock. He was a friend of Gavin Hamilton, who introduced him to Burns. Logan subscribed to the Kilmarnock Edition, and Burns sent him 20 copies to distribute. He mentioned Logan in 'The Kirk's Alarm'. Logan received a copy of the poem from Burns with a letter dated 7th August 1789, along with the injunction not on any account 'to give, or permit to be taken, any copy of the Ballad'. The poet visited him several times on his journeys to and from Ayrshire, and during one of his visits is said to have written 'Afton Water'.
