Lochmaben
"Marjory o' the many Lochs, A Carlin auld and teugh."
An ancient royal burgh in Annandale parish, Dumfriesshire. In the castle in the loch, Bruce's family once lived. Lochmaben, referred to in 'The Five Carlins', is about 8 miles from Dumfries. Hallheaths, the home of the Walter Riddells at the time of Burns's death, lay to the east of Lochmaben. Writing to Graham of Fintry from Ellisland on 9th December 1789, Burns, alluding to Lochmaben, remarked that he had the 'honour to be a Burgess of the town'. Neither record nor even mention of the conferring of this honour can be found in the burgh records.
