Lindsay, The Rev William (1725? 74)
The first New Licht minister to be inducted at the Laigh or parish Church of Kilmarnock. Tradition has it that he received the living from the Earl of Gelencairn through his wife Margaret Lauder, who was once thought to have been Glencairn's housekeeper, though this has now been disproved. She was the daughter of a Dalkeith writer. Lindsay was inducted in 1764, much against popular sentiment; so much so much so that there was a riot at the ceremony. A shoemaker by the name of Hunter wrote a scoffing ballad about the occasion. Several people were sentenced to one month's imprisonment and whipped through the streets. A curious anecdote was told by William Aiton of Hamilton about the affair. The minister of Fenwick fled on horseback through the scene. At the same time, an English commercial traveller, who asked the way to Glasgow, was told to follow the minister. This he did, to the terror of the minister, who thought he was being pursued by an outraged Calvinist. On finding his mistake when he halted at a farmer friend's house, traveller and minister laughed heartily, and the traveller stayed the night at the farmer's house.
