Lindsay, Isabella (b. 1746)
Daughter of a Jedburgh doctor, she attracted the poet's attention when he stopped there during his Border tour of 1787. He described her in his Journal as: 'a good humor'd amiable girl; rather short et embonpoint, but handsome and extremely graceful beautiful hazle eyes, full of spirit, and sparkling with delicious moisture an engaging face and manner, un tout ensemble that speaks her of the first order of female minds'. She married Adam Armstrong 24 days after having parted with Burns, and in view of her engagement, was apparently much criticised locally for her 'easy manners' with the poet. Armstrong was employed by the Russian government. On her marriage, she went with him to Russia, where she died without ever returning to Scotland. Burns ended his description of his Jedburgh visit with another reference to Isabella: 'Sweet Isabella Lindsay, may Peace dwell in thy bosom, uninterrupted, except by the tumultuous throbbings of rapturous Love! That love-kindling eye must beam on another not me; that graceful form must bless another's arms, not mine.'
