Lawrie of Redcastle, Walter Sloan
Figured in the 2nd of Burns's Heron Election Ballads: "But we winna mention Redcastle, The body e'en let him escape! He'd venture the gallows for siller, An' 'twere na the cost o' the rape!"
His grandfather's name, according to Grierson, was 'Clautenpluck', and he changed it to Laurieston'. Grierson also tells us that Lawrie was 'a very little man a landlady once made a bill reckoning one short of the number in the company... she had missed Mr Laurie, pointing to him "O" says she, "as for little master", clasping his hand, "I did not mind him!"'; which explains part of Burns's reference to him.
