Lawrie, Christina or Christie (1766 1827)
A daughter of the Rev George Lawrie. When Burns was in Edinburgh, he enjoyed listening to her playing the spinet. Indeed, we have Gilbert's testimony of that: 'The first time Robert heard the spinnet played upon was at the house of Dr Lawrie'. On 5th February 1787, Burns wrote to her father: 'By far the most agreeable hours I have spent in Edinburgh must be placed to the account of Miss Lowrie and her Pianoforte. I cannot help repeating to you and Mrs Lowrie a compliment that Mr M'kenzie, the celebrated 'Man of feeling' paid to Miss Christie the other night at the Concert. I had come in at an interlude, and sat down by him, till I saw Miss Lowrie in a seat not very far distant, and went up to pay my respects to her. On my return to Mr M'Kenzie, he asked me who she was: I told him 'twas the daughter of a reverend friend of mine in the West Country. He returned there was something very striking to his idea in her appearance. On my desiring to know what it was, he was pleased to say: "She has a great deal of the elegance of a well-bred Lady about her, with all the sweet simplicity of a Country girl".' Christina Lawrie married a Glasgow bookseller, Alexander Wilson.
