Kennedy, Thomas (d. 1846)
According to Chambers, Burns had known Kennedy when the poet was a boy. Burns later came upon him when Tam was a pedlar. In his old age, Kennedy knew William Cobbett who printed the following lines, either from manuscript or from recollection. "As Tam the chapman on a day Wi' Death forgather'd by the way, [had a meeting Weel pleas'd he greets a wight sae famous, And Death was nae less pleas'd wi' Thomas. Wha cheerfully lays down his pack, And there blaws up a hearty crack; His social, friendly honest heart Sae tickled Death, they couldna part; Sae, after viewing knives and garters, Death taks him hame to gie him quarters."
Kennedy died in Homor, Courtland County, New York
