Kennedy, Jean (b. 1738)
Daughter of Alexander Kennedy, she was born in Crossraguel, and with her sister, Anne, kept a small inn at the Kirk-town of Kirkoswald (any little village with a parish church was called 'The Kirkton' or 'Kirktown'). Her tavern was a respectable one, and she and her sister were known as 'The Ledddies'. She is the 'Kirkton Jean' of 'Tam o' Shanter', but in the poem, instead of the inn being described as 'The Leddie's House', as it was in reality, Burns called it 'The Lord's House'.
